We have recently moved to a newbuild property and were told we had to go with British Gas for at least a month. We've just had our first bill from British Gas and they have just put us on their Standatd Tariff without giving us a choice. This isn't the cheapest tariff, can they do this?

When you move in you are on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with the existing supplier.
This supplier must place you on a tariff that has no restrictions for leaving early etc - that is their Standard tariff.
Had you contacted BG the day you moved in, they would have switched you to a cheaper tariff that day, but there would be restrictions.0
