How is car insurance weighted...very confused!

Hi all:)
I would really appreciate a little bit of advice about how car insurance premiums are worked out! The reason I ask is that I was having a look to see how much insuring insuring the new car I am after would cost me to insure. I had a look on quotemehappy, bang, got a quote for £510, fair enough. Thinking it might save a few quid to put it in my husbands name (we would drive it a similar amount anyway) I got a quote for him.....£270!!
I don't understand why it was so much cheaper, we are the same age, same length of time driving, same address (obviously!), same clean license, same NCD, even same profession! The only difference is sex as far as I can see?? Are there any other factors which would affect????
Many thanks if anyone can shed light.....I was maybe expecting a few quid difference!!

  • Could be 1 of a hundred factors. Even down to the fact you may be same age but different months could trigger different categories on an insurers rating guide.

Sex always ends up costing a lot in my experience.

Put him on yours as a named driver and see how much it brings the quote down.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

So you both have exactly the same date of birth, exactly the same job, passed your driving tests on exactly the same day, have exactly the same claims history, quoted for exactly the same mileage...?

And both did an online comparison with the same company at the same moment?

Hi, thank you for your reply.
As regards your points, we did pass our driving tests in the same month and year (not same day, that would be too much!), we do have same job (nurses at same hospital so hence similar mileage). As regards DOB, well he is 4 days older than me!! Neither has ever made a claim either. I accept that there would be a difference as it couldn't be exactly the same for us both, it was the almost doubling of the quote that threw me that's all, hence why I was wondering.
Thank you all for the replies
