There's something called "The Grand Canyon" - it looks like God's open cast mine

Ok you asked!Sunset crater/ Meteor crater/ Wupatki ruins/ Lowell Observatory/ Williams for route 66/ Antelope Canyon/ Lake Powell/ Sedona/ Monument Valley/ Canyon de Chelley/ London Bridge/ Painted Desert/ Tucson for your ghost towns/ GC as mentioned above/ Phoenix for shopping - also do a desert night tour here/ Glen Canyon Dam/ Horseshoe Bend overlook/ Havasui Falls/ Spider Rock/ Hoover Dam Any of that take your fancy? Seriously I'd get yourself a guidebook & see what you'd like best. It's huge & the terrain is different from end to end. I love Arizona & could quite happily spend 4 weeks or more & not be bored!

Try the frommers series of guide, much better for stateside travel than rugh guide or lonely planet.Off the top of my head - from LA you could travel through Palm Springs, Mojave Desert, stopping for a while at Joshua Tree National Park (absolutely beautiful!), travel on the smaller roads (no Interstate!) for the best, most desolate, stretch for miles, no traffic, but always within reach of a gas station/ motel. Amazing driving for anyone who has to put up with the UK!I'd take the 62 out of Palm Springs, stop over at Twentynine Palms for crisp clean desert air & Joshua Trees. Then carry on the 62 to meet the 95 at Vidal Junction. Head North to Needles switch to the I40 for a bit to Kingman, here you can pick up route 66! Take this to Peach Springs & Seligman & it'll bring you back to the I40 & Williams. From here head to Flagstaff & take the 89 North for sunset/ meteor/ wupatki/ painted desert/ antelope/ horseshoe/ glen canyon/ monument valley/ glen canyon (all east of the GC) OR go south on the 89A to Sedona (red rocks) & on to Tucson for more of the wild west/ cowboy stuff. I believe Jerome & Cottonwood near Sedona have ghost towns (but I've not been).I wish it was me! I hope I've helped a bit...

As Bina said above, there are endless variations in Arizona alone but as you are going from LA, how about this:-
North to Yosemite NP, South-East through Death Valley, byepass Vegas (nothing to see there), North-East take in Grand Canyon (North rim), Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon, East to Canyonlands NP, South towards Page taking in Glen Canyon and Antelope Canyon, South again for Sedona then take the 66 back to LA.
2 weeks would not be enough for my ideal trip, it would need to be at least 4 weeks to do it justice. I have done this route albeit on 2 different visits, make sure you get a good car as there are some extreme driving conditions to go through.
