Call it paranoia my friend. I don't like having to deal with complicated problems and I've only raised a handful of serious complaints with companies I have dealt with in the past 10yrs all of which have been dealt with, without the need to even consider approaching an ombudsman/regulator.

I'm extremely positive about those I have dealings with, be they the local authourity, the local water board, my electricity supplier, even my domain registrars and numerous others, the few occasional minor issues with arise are all dealt with in a friendly and efficient way. I have found the majority of companies in the UK are usually extremely good and extremely efficient. The rest are what I consider to be pretty good, at least the ones I have had dealings with.

Like I said, call it paranoia if you like, but personally speaking I'd like the added protection of an ombudsman or regulator wherever possible, so I'll simply leave the companies which don't offer this and switch to those who do. The companies I'm talking about are very good, none of them have given me any reason to even contact them since the initial sales call, truthfully speaking I don't ever envisage having any problems with any of them, but I don't have a crystal ball, none of us do, and if a couple of years, or even 20 years down the line, something breaks, I'd like that added protection.

Why I am being questioned for what seems to me to be basic common sense is, to be honest, beyond me.

Think theres a big difference between common sense & clear paranoia. You fall in the latter catagory.

All CP's are regulated by Ofcom. Theres your protection.

But like dmg said, if even before you're using their services & you're asking for an ombudsman it sounds like you're looking for trouble!
  • you would have recourse in normal law anyway . the majority of companies aren't covered by an ombudsman.
what do you do about having a contract with a photo-copying company?

Is that for certain? They would be the default ombudsman if a company isn't registered with an ombudsman?

If that's the case then I don't have to switch companies.

I can appreciate that it looks like I am "looking for trouble", but after being bombarded with information about internet fraud for so long, it came as quite a shock to learn that companies I do business with have chosen to ignore the law, it wasn't even something I'd considered that they would do, such is the quality of their products and customer services.

If I'm protected regardless of their compliance with the ombudsman thing, it does make me breathe a little easier so thank you for that normanmark

internet fraud? Go on, which is the provider in question & what kind of internet fraud is/could be committed?

Of course internet fraud starts & ends with the user, not something that providers would normally held accountable for like

I would like to help more Carl. but you're being too vague

Sorry, the internet fraud I was referring to is the phishing and hacking that goes on, just made me kinda panic when I realised that I wasn't covered by ombudsman protection, on reflection it was probably an over-reaction, it just shocked me that there are companies completely ignoring law which is 4yrs old.

I liked it better when I didn't even know there was such a law.

Well first of all, responsibility of phising & hacking is down to the user, not the ISP. So if you did want to 'challenge' a provider on this, you wouldnt get very far.

Just make sure you are firewalled & anti-virus'd up on your home computer

And learn more on how to detect phishing here
