When i read untested on a listing it automatically registers as it doesnt work and maybe useful for parts only if im lucky.

And as Miss Granger above mentioned how can it be sold as seen if the buyer had not seen it?

Dont forget your liable for the return postage.

Hermione, When you ask me if I am sure? are you suggesting I have forgotten or that I am confused or are you implying I am a lying cheating scumbag?

Is this how you like to spend your time, accusing people of dishonesty after engaging your razor sharp intuition.
How your minds works makes me feel a little sad for you. In the outside world I manage to avoid such types but this is the internet so people feel they can throw out any sort of accusation without comeback.

just to feed your cell, I had no idea of the battery condition as I had no charger and stated clearly it was untested.
The buyer has since come back to me informing me the battery needs replacing and wants me to contribute.
I am going to ask them to return it to me. not because it will fetch 3 x more with a new battery but because I'd rather throw it in the bin than let him keep it.

I think you misunderstand the concerns raised in that post. Firstly as has been mentioned by others, the term 'sold as seen' is nonsense on eBay or any remote selling site and can sometimes be seen as a little dishonest by a seller who knows something isn't right and thinks that they are safe if they make that statement.

Also , the implication was that the item worked, this is not a clear cut 'not working item sold for scrap' and will have fetched more as your wording suggests it was fine. Again as above, never oversell on eBay , if you are happy it is probably working then sell it as you did but expect returns if it needs any parts or work on it, if you really aren't sure then sell it as not working, for parts or repairs only.

However, asking for a straight return is a perfectly acceptable way of dealing with this, get buyer to open a return for SNAD , send a return label via eBay and then when you have item back refund in full. You can then sort out a battery and resell it for more.

Thank you soolin but I don't really think so. I think the post was quite accusatory.

If i was buying from eBay and the listing had "no returns option.
sold as seen, untested, worked last time I used it"
I would accept that it may or may not work and would limit my bidding accordingly.

I appreciate the helpful posts here and realise that it was not the best way for me to have worded the fact that it was untested and may not work and I will certainly never use "sold as seen" in that way again.

A nicely phrased post, thank you.

Ultimately when selling online it is worth forgetting logic and what we would do if we were the buyer and to concentrate only on assuming the buyer thinks they are getting a bargain and work from there.

I have an issue at the moment with buyers confusing dispatch times with postage methods, any reasonable person would see a three day dispatch and realise I can't send for three days, my buyer sees a three day dispatch and thinks if he pays extra for 1st class I can post same or next day. There is no accounting for what buyers believe they are reading.

If you get the buyer to open a SNAD case though the return label will need to be prepaid. This is not easy for an international return. The buyer may just go away if you ask them to open a case but if they do open a case you might need to think about the return postage cost from an international buyer especially if they feel the need to send it back tracked.
  • How much will a new battery cost compared to the selling price of the item?

One thing to remember is that the battery is a lithium ion one, the buyer may well be able to get a full refund without having to return the item if they open a paypal dispute and claim that the battery is faulty.
This is because it's not permissible to send faulty rechargeable lithium battery through the post so it would be impossible for them to return it.

I know this for a fact as I had to open such a dispute a few months ago for a battery I purchased that was intended to replace an old one fitted in a tablet.

I think with untested items you have to keep an open mind that if it doesn't work, then be prepared to accept a return.
Generally, as a seller, anything on ebay is returnable. I see loads of listings 'I stating I don't accept returns'. As a buyer, I am thinking just how would you stop me returning it?
I think this where sellers fall down. You are always at the mercy of the buyer and ebay. The only satisfactory outcome in any transaction is a happy buyer and that is the sole target!
