I've set Google as my web browser, but I'm only getting four shortcut boxes instead of eight?

Google is not browser. Do you mean Chrome? Or the google website?

When you open up chrome you can set 4 boxes as favourite websites or is it most popular(not sure which 1).
  • You've probably just closed the other thumbnails.

    Does this help?

You can normally add shortcuts to a bar across the top of any browser, I have 40.

That way they are there all the time and not just on your home page.

Yes, the Bookmarks bar. Very handy, I have a couple of dozen folders across the top, each with up to 30 or 40 bookmarks listed in the dropdown (there's no limit, really, as you can have subfolders listed on the dropdown menu too, each with it's own list).

Yes, I get two rows of four which just seem to be drawn from history, so presumably vary, but I've never taken any notice of them. If they're useful, they'll all be on my Bookmarks bar anyway (as above).

You can add more, hover over 1 of the boxes and click "edit" and you can either add a website of your choice or add another 4 of the top sites you visit.

I thought maybe I could remove them all in the same way, but more pop up to populate their spaces. Never mind, I've always ignored them anyway.

"Yes, I get two rows of four "

But if you make the window itself smaller you will only get 1 row of four
and make it smaller still and you will get none

i.e. the element are dropped row by row rather than the chrome window becoming scroll able as it shrinks
