Buying a new mattress

completely doing my head in trying to find a new double mattress for my daughter's room.

Went to IKEA and she wants a wooden slatted frame from there and liked the Hokkasen mattress (medium firm) but that gets a bad score on Which as the memory foam can make you sweaty apparently, and the Which? best buy from there is too firm.

Went to a local firm in Leeds and she tried a Comfort Angel pocket spring tufted mattress which she also liked. But i have been trying to google this make to look at any reviews and nothing comes up.

I went to a more upmarket place which also had some more affordable options - ie £280-£350 for a double from Sealy for example but she found these too hard.

Is there an alternative to memory foam which gives the softness/comfort but not the heat?

By the way I was informed that 'tufted' meant it had buttons on it - surely it means more than that?

Have you considered one of the many mattress in a box companies that do the 100 night trial offers? They often do pretty good Black Friday sales, so you can try one for 100 nights and then try another one for 100 nights by which time you can take advantage of the one that works best in the sales.

I would not change from memory foam however, it can make you hot on summer nights because you sink into it, if your daughters young then memory foam might not be the best option.
Don't know if it's still the case but a good range of mattresses was available on Wayfair which is where i got mine last time.
Enjoy everyday like it's your last!

When buying a mattress I always look at this advice site run by an independent bed maker:
    https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/understanding-beds/who-owns-what-mattress-brand/
Lots of brands are made by just a few companies.
It will also give you advice on which type of mattress are suited to slatted beds.

If you are in Leeds take a trip to Christopher Pratts on Regent Street. Wide selection of choices and knowledgeable staff.

if i was looking for a budget mattress (ie less than about 1500) then i would probably look at a futon mattress - i have used this company quite a few times before and they are specialists in futons http://www.futons247.co.uk/

i am not really a fan of either foam or sprung mattresses!

Thanks for this suggestion - can I ask which of their mattresses have you used? Wondering about the difference between the one with springs v latex core.

I've had my eye on a Herdy Sleep mattress to replace our old tired foam mattress, but these futon ones are less than half the price so an attractive option and many are available in small double size.

I just got their standard non folding futon http://www.futons247.co.uk/futon-mattress-choice/4-futon-mattress-8-layer-lambswool-woolfelt.html

I swapped it a few years ago for a latex mattress from abaca but it was a lot more expensive, but I would happily get a futon mattress rather than foam or sprung if i was on a budget

The new memory foam mattresses have 'cool' technology to reduce the warming effects of the foam - so worth looking into that.
