Does anyone else do this?

Having read an article on the Daily Mail website today about a Big Issue seller who has invested in a chip and pin machine, it got me thinking!

Does anyone else use the likes of PayPal Here at car boot sales/fairs?

I'd have thought that having the option to take card payments would make you more desirable to potential buyers.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

You want to give buyers at a car boot sale Paypal protection...?

As for cards....I've never seen anyone who didn't turn up expecting to pay cash. A card machine seems a needless complication.

Not sure if I'm missing something here, I don't need to give anyone protection? It was more to be able to take contactless payments via a card machine function?

I'm aware that most individuals will naturally come to a car boot with cash, but just thought it could be a good idea for those who 'run out of money' or would like the ability to do so?

If you let someone pay by Paypal (which is what you referred to in your original post), they will have protection unless you use the Friends and Family option. Similarly, if you let them pay by debit card they could initiate a chargeback; or claim S75 protection if they use a credit card and the item was pricey enough for such a claim.

You can get a PayPal card machine that is completely different to accepting PayPal on a collected item. Lots of people have them at the fairs and conventions I attend, they are just like a merchant card reader and are a different system to just taking a PayPal payment.

I wouldn't be handing my credit card to some random person on a car boot field. It'd be a godsend for the criminals who could use "lookalikes" to gain your card details, pin number, etc.

Other card systems are available, but this is the PayPal one

It is not uncommon now to lose sales at fairs or other events if you don't take cards, everyone just expects to be able to use a card everywhere.

iZettle seems to be preferred by people I know who use them.
Several offer free or free trial machines. Lots of market traders use them now, especially makers markets.
If it's not costing much and gets more money in then why wouldn't you? If you sell high ticket items it makes most sense, there's fewer people carrying wads of cash about.

The lady I often travel with for events uses the Izettle reader as he items are expensive and beyond the sort of money you might reasonably have in cash in your pocket. I am getting to the stage now, even with my cheaper items that I seriously need to consider one of the card readers so that I don't lose impulse sales.

I try and visit markets as often as I can. A couple of years ago it was rare to find anyone taking cards, it's more rare now not to find anyone. That's on non-traditional type markets (makers, farmers, craft, etc).

I get shocked when I find the occasional small shop that doesn't take cards. It used to be newsagents and the like who had bad credit ratings and weren't able to accept them, now there's no excuse. The fees must surely outweigh the loss of trade in not accepting them.
