Large Item return to Wayfair but no packaging

Hi there,
I ordered a riser recline chair with Wayfair.
It arrived yesterday with a two man crew and a "delivery to the room of your choice" on the delivery.
It wouldn't fit through my door so they took it out of the packaging,
Upon initial inspection it looked ok but as I was inspecting it they cut up the massive cardboard box that it had come in with a Stanley knife, and then crushed it all down.
When I looked at it properly, they have delivered the wrong manufacturer and a different model, although the two look very similar on the internet,
I oredered a "Dumbarton" chair by Andover Mills.
They have delivered a Regency chair by Birlea.
The recline doesn't work properly.
The chair is much smaller than the one I ordered; it is 76cm x 76cm whereas I ordered one that measured 88cm x 84cm - consequently the chair is too small.
I have looked at Wayfair's returns policy and it states I must have original packaging.....which their delivery men destroyed,
I do not have another box that is that big and cannot think where to get one.

Please help me by telling me what I can do - I want a refund but how can I get it ready for shipping when it weighs 63kg and I certainly cannot wrap it therefore? And I don't have a box.

The goods dont conform to contract. Unless you agreed to return the goods at the time you entered the contract, your only obligation is to make the goods available for their collection. Even if you agreed to return them, the retailer is liable for the reasonable costs involved.

Speak to wayfair first, explain the issue and see what they say. You may find they'll send a courier with packaging.

If they tell you that you need original packaging, remind them that they have certain obligations under the consumer rights act and that your rights are not contingent on the original packaging being available.

  • Wayfair have a fantastic customer service , the best I have experienced so am sure you will have no problem. I had an issue with an item that had cost £140 was scratched but functional I had asked for a replacement which was arranged and the item I had they told me to throw away or donate to charity !
I have never known that before , so just give them a call I am sure it will be fine .

If the smaller chair had to be removed from its packaging to fit through your door, are you confident that the larger chair can be delivered to the required room, even with its packaging removed?

Why do you want a refund, and not just the correct chair delivered?

Most, if not all, motorised riser recliner chairs come in 2 parts, the back and the seat (with motor) so probably wont be an issue.

The "Dumbarton" that you ordered and the Regency you received are one and the same. A lot of these "manufacturers" simply badge, for want of a better description, the same, budget chinese made riser/recliner chairs.

This is what i experienced too. Ordered a hall table £70, was a bit short on leg when on wood floor and some joints not filled in very good. no problem had another one sent and told to keep last one now i have one in hall and on the landing, it's leg better on carpet, ha ha. Would order from them again.

    Just resurrecting this thread..

We're looking at ordering 2 armchairs, but obviously we're unable to "try before we buy" to see how comfortable they are.

If they've been unwrapped can we return them? Also the cost of return could be huge?

Should we bother, or just try to find what we want in a physical shop?

Any recommendations as to best stockists of non-sofa armchairs?
