Error with Barclays Online - schedule a payment

Anybody experiencing any funnies with Barclays online banking? I logged in earlier to schedule a routine payment to my Barclaycard Visa credit card account. Noted that in the existing payee list "Barclaycard Visa" had been updated to say "Barclaycard Mastercard". The saved payment details however are still correct, so selected it and put filled in the amount and date etc.
Got an error that begins with an exclamation mark in a circle - "!1308 - Please check your payment reference. It may be that it doesn't match the expected format for the company you're paying. Or, the details you've saved may no longer match those expected by the company. Try deleting the old payee details. You can then make the payment by selecting 'Pay a Bill' and choosing the 'Pay a Bill for the first time' option. You'll then be able to choose the correct company details."
It seems online banking is expecting the payment reference field to have a 12 character numeric that begins 5301 as opposed to the correct 4929. AIUI 5301 indicates a Mastercard and 4929 is Visa. I've never had a Mastercard issued by Barclays/Barclaycard, didn't even know they existed.

This may be an out of the box thought , but have you tried making a new payment as it suggests?

Not yet, because I can't locate the card reader. The payee details are saved and can be re-used once set up with the card reader. And this payee has been working fine for several years. Most recently about 4 weeks ago. Somehow my Visa Barclaycard has morphed into a Mastercard Barclaycard. From past experience phoning Barclays is an all day job with no guarantee of a resolve.0
