Hi all,
I do some IT support over VOIP and want to replace my headset with a microphone and use the speakers of one of my monitors. From what I found out already is, that I need a unidirectional microphone, otherwise the people I speak to will hear themselves through my microphone.
The microphone needs to be 40 - 50 cm away from me above my screens. I can't have something closer just in front of me as I need to use my screens and my keyboard. I also don't want the microphone standing on my desk. Space is at a premium ;-)
I have one of these monitor stands https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MQ4CKTV and like to attach the microphone on it somehow. Either on the vertical pole or at the vesa bracket at the back of one of the screens.
Does anyone has a recommendation for each of it? It shouldn't be too expensive. My current headset was about £12 and the quality is/was sufficient. I don't record high quality podcasts or something like that.

have you though about a headset? that will also keep your voice more constant too. Get one withva mute switch.
When we got out laptops, one of these was included and they work very well

You do not say why you do not want a head mounted mic (that is the implication from what our write). It need not be mic and headphones combined thus allowing you to use a mic and your monitor speakers!
Your desire to move the mic further away from your mouth and also stop feedback is rather self defeating. Close mic techniques eliminate a good amount of speaker noise as distances are significantly different between mic/mouth and mic/speakers. Then directional mic improves that. You might find you need both.
Rifle mics give best rejection and then cardiod next best.
There are many a cheap mic on the market but to advise further we need to know the sensitivity of your PC input! Is it a mic input or line input, for starters?0 -
P.s. having found a suitable mic if you still want to attach to your monitor then the are spring clip attachments for the mic.0

How about a Jabra SPEAK 510 USB/Bluetooth Portable AudioConferencing device? I have one and it seems to work very well.
It can also act as a Bluetooth speaker.
I know it doesn't meet your "not on the desk" requirement, but you can put it to the side (or even under your monitors) and it'll pick up your voice just fine.0 -
If you want to spend a lot of money, as I have, the SpeechWare 6-in-1 desktop microphone with speaker is unsurpassed for dictation and VOIP.I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".0

Why not look on youtube as you can sometimes see what people are using and you can judge the audio quality0 -
Yes, but this could imply you want to replace it with a similar type too.
Unlikely given that the OP actually said ...I do some IT support over VOIP and want to replace my headset with a microphone and use the speakers of one of my monitors.
I appreciate that my earlier suggestion doesn't exactly match what OP asked, but I believe it addresses the intent behind the question.0 -
Heil microphones. Very directional pattern with good rejection from the sides and the rear so they won't pick up everything in the room.
You do want it nearer than 40-50cm though so use a mic boom. The reason for this is that in order to be a decent volume you'd have to up the mic gain. The downside of this is that it will increase the level of background noise that is picked up. Ever phoned a call centre and you struggle to hear what the person is saying because you can also hear everyone else in the call center speaking? You'll sound like that with a mic 40-50cm away from you.
If you look on internet TV channels such as Twit.TV when they're doing their broadcasts you'll find they have no problem using screens on their computers as they're using the microphones and they're all using Heil PR40s.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
