I cannot copy the article, but its very low on emissions, and facts!

Its EURO 6, which makes it a modern 'standard' emissions; is it just 'greenwash', I believe it often is.
The article does not mention an electric engine or batteries, so I assume its not a hybrid.

Does anyone know anything about bus engines?

Like diesel cars the buses simply have have DPFs and Adblue to clean up emissions.

No electric or hybrid.

A few years ago First made a big splash about Leeds possibly having !!!8220;Boris buses!!!8221;, it was all hogwash, they are hopeless, bus companies know this so avoid them like the plague.

Euro 6 emissions are compulsory for every new bus registered since the end of 2013, and are a big reduction in NOx emissions, particularly, over Euro 5 (2008-on) and earlier standards. Euro5 - 2.0g/kWh NOX, Euro 6 - 0.4g/kWh

The "95% cleaner" figure will be based on the maximum permissible emissions of certain pollutants - Euro I (1992 to 1996) was 8.0g/kWh NOx...

If they were looking at particulates, the reduction from Euro 1 (0.612g/kWh to 0.01g/kWh) is an even larger %age, 98.4%...

He was referring specifically to the Euro VI diesel engined buses, as referenced by the OP.

No but I do know lorries and they're the same thing with a different body. Mine is Euro 6. It uses specific engine oils, it uses adblue which is injected into the exhaust to reduce NOx. It has a diesel particulate filter fitted which captures all the soot typically thrown out the exhaust of older lorries and buses and periodically it runs a regeneration cycle which superheats the DPF filter turning the soot to harmless ash which is discharged out of the exhaust.

As for the OP, no it isn't Greenwash, it's part of a process that has been going on since the early 1990s

It does seem like 'greenwash' to me; it is not a "ultra low emission" vehicles, it is just a normal EURO 6 standard engine.
Since the VW and other manufacturers have fiddled the tests, there is a lot of skepticism about emissions.
The EURO 6 standards are getting lower, but what are the emissions in real life? Its always been the case, that if anyone accelerates hard, there will be lots more smoke.
I drove behind a little white van this morning, which was very smoky, even at slow speeds.

The emission standards aren't changing, but the tests are. Instead of the NEDC test cycle, the WLTP test cycle started to apply from last year, and will apply to all new vehicles from this year. It's much more comprehensive, nearer to real-world conditions, and harder to "game". BUT - it applies to cars and vans only, not to larger commercials, because they're already slightly different in the way they're measured and tested.

No they're not. The Euro VI limits, for heavy duty vehicles (light duty vehicles such as cars have different limits), have been set for over 9 years now with only slight amendments in 2010 and 2014. As mentioned, it's not the standards that are the issue, it's regulations regarding testing and their adherence that matters.

Are you sure they're not diesel-electric buses like the ones that are coming into service in Birmingham? When the bus stops the engine cuts out, and it then pulls away under electric power before the engine starts up again. I've noticed it a lot in the last few weeks.
