I use a website which somehow changes it's settings so that normal site operation (i.e. click on links and scroll bars) is disabled so that the next click you do anywhere on the page will open up a new tab with an advert. The priorty is given to the new tab, i.e. you get taken to the the new tab and advert, and you have to shut it down, to see the site you want again.

Up until now this has not been a problem because it only did it once in every 3 or 4 clicks so although annoying you could still navigate the site and see what you wanted to see. But today the site is doing this on every click, so you cannot navigate the site at all, constantly closing the new tabs.

Blocking pop ups makes no difference because it is not a pop up, it is a new tab....

How do I set chrome to block new tabs being opened ?

Thanks

You can't - at least not without an addon. And even then it would only then open the links in the current tab rather than blocking the adverts altogether.

    Other options:

Don't use the site? (If they're going to annoy their visitors, why should you visit?)

Turn off Javascript in the browser? (Or add that site to the Blocked list)?
    (Settings | Advanced | Privacy | Content)

Add the Adblock or uBlock addon to Chrome?
  • Use firefox perhaps?

    Use firefox perhaps?

Would that stop all the ads whether they are pop up, redirects within the same tab, or new tabs on disabled clicks?

Firefox allows stop script...Is it intelligent enough to be able to stop only the script that opens the new tab for an advert?

And Chrome is not capable of the same thing....?

How do I turn off javascript ? Will this work? I guess I will soon find out if I am told how to turn it off.

EDIT...I found it., it's off now hopefully...I will test the site again

EDIT... Nope, the features I use the site for require javascript.

Not trying to say it will, it was a suggestion to see if it exhibits the same symptoms

    That's da bomb!

Works wonders....has blocked 17 pop ups in 3 mins of use on my website and I am able to use the site seemingly almost seamlessly, I did have one screen change but I could resolve it.

I think the website creators do not realise or have not intended for the pop up tabs on every click, they will probably get around to fixing it.... but it's now their loss because it forced me to find a solution. I won't have any pops now

    Thank you...

Most sites use scripts these days. What you might want to do is disable scripts for third-party websites. There's a great add-on for Chrome and Firefox called uMatrix, which allows you to control which domains are allowed to run scripts. It's probably too much hassle for some people, but control-freaks will love it.

I think anyone would appreciate uBlock Origin, though. It's an excellent ad-blocker (from the same developer as uMatrix). It's not to be confused with uBlock, or other add-ons with very similar names.

Reinstall your chrome maybe that should do the trick. It seems to be a glitch by not being able to distinguish pop windows from new tabs/windows triggered by mouse click.
