Fitted kitchen query

Hi, looking for some advice please.

We bought a new fitted kitchen in summer '15. It's solid painted wood and was expensive.
Shortly after being fitted the doors started to 'shift' and the paint cracked on the joins. We contacted the shop who after much faff and liaison with the manufacturer where we had to put a moisture monitor on the kitchen to check it wasn't damp!!! Agreed to replace all the doors, claiming that it must have been a faulty batch.
A couple of months later we had the same issue.
My husband has now bypassed the shop and go straight to the manufacturer (who are being quite awkward...it's not the shop's fault, it's a design flaw)
My husband plans on ringing them to chase it tomorrow and I wondered if anyone had any advice on what we should do/say/ask for
Thanks in advance

The manufacturer are only liable to provide a warranty if they offered to provide one.

Any consumer rights you have are against the retailer. It would then be up to the retailer to recover their losses from the manufacturer (unless they agreed to bear those costs in order to get a cheaper unit price - as sellers sometimes do).

As for the water thing, I'd say anything that has been designed for a kitchen or bathroom should be able to withstand heavy condensation due to the nature of the rooms themselves. Similar to how some laminate is not suited to bathrooms/kitchens due to the humidity.

If you purchased in summer 2015 then your contract will be under the Sale of Goods Act (law changed for contracts entered into on or after 1st Oct 2015).

If you paid by credit card or a finance agreement then you may be able to raise a section 75 claim against the creditor (who has joint & several liability for the contract).

We had exactly the same problem, the manufacturer just kept sending new until we insisted on a lower spec. and a refund of the difference in price.

Keep going through the kitchen supplier, we started to go straight to the manufacturer but soon realised that they would give us the run arround.

Keep going until you are happy with the outcome and take what the manufacturer says with a large pinch of salt, they blamed the wrong storage conditions even when they had just delivered yet another set of doors straight from the factory that were cracked.

Out of interest would you be willing to tell us the name of the manufacturer?

  • Thanks both. We've not totally bypassed the supplier. They are in the loop of us contacting the manufacturer. The supplier is obviously not happy either. In fact he told my husband last week that based on our experience he's put other customers off buying the solid wood.

I'll happily tell you who it is Omega.

I'd be happy with the cheaper doors and a refund.

Thank you for the advice. I'll see what I can do.
