UNISONProtect - genuine free cover?

Hi - a new member to the forum here, looking for some advice / input on the UNISONProtect scheme. I've already carried out a Google search and couldn't find much information on it...

Apparently, as a Unison member, I'm eligible for £5,000 worth of free accidental death cover :undecided The portion of the form I'd have to send back (should I accept this offer) says that the cover lasts for one year...then I can renew again for free.

I'm a bit dubious about this - if it's free, why should I have to renew again after one year if I'm still a Unison member? I pay my union fees out of my wages before I receive them each month, and would hate to be tied in to paying for this (apparently) free cover if I forgot to sign something after the 12 month period to cover me (apparently) for free for the following year.

Also, the idea of £5,000 worth of cover for free sounds a bit too good to be true...

Has anyone already signed up to this scheme, and, if so, what are your experiences?

  • It!!!8217;s not free. You pay for it with part of your subs as Unison subsidise the scheme. In all fairness there is no catch as long as you opt out of marketing information.

You will have a renewal date on your policy. Make a note of this and you know when you have to re register.

Accidental death cover is a gimmick. You are very unlikely to die from an accident. It is typically offered "free" as part of various packages. In this case, an incentive to pay your subs.

I remember some years ago we gave away around £10,000 of accidental death cover for people that signed a form as a method to encourage people returning the form.
