Horrendous solicitor, what can I do?

So, I need a little advise with the sale of my house.

Me and my partner split, so we need to sell our house. It sold about 6 months ago, but everything is taking so long. Mainly down to our solicitor.
So my ex partner told me the solictor was one his family had used before, he cut us a good deal and we were using an estate agent that is a family friend so I agreed to use him.
Turns out, this guy is totally unreachable, for me anyway. I will call and call and call and get no answer, leave numerous voicemails and nothing, send about 5 emails a day and still nothing. But this isn’t the worst part, my ex partner text me today saying that his mum (???) had been on the phone to a contact at the solicitors that I had never heard of, or that my
Ex partner would not give me a contact number for (obviously a friend of his mother’s), and she told her that the buyers solicitors are just going through the paperwork. Anyway, I am fuming, I am fed up of being nice, it is ridiculous that I cannot get an update on the sale of MY OWN HOUSE, but my ex partners MOTHER can call straight through?! I never gave her permission to be able to discuss the sale of my house?

What can I do about this? Things are getting awkward and I need some advice. I want to pull out of the sale and use a different solicitor, I was silly to go ahead with theirs, but was trying to remain civil. I no longer care. I just need to know about the sale of my house, I need to arrange somewhere to live, so with no updates I cannot get anything sorted.

Solicitor gets the blame however rarely is at fault.

What has your Estate Agent said? They are the ones with their finger on the pulse.

The estate agents are great, however they only have the same contact for the solicitors as I do, so are always unable to get hold of anyone. The whole thing is just a joke. The solicitors on the other side seem hot on everything but ours takes weeks, and I never hear anything

Can you turn up in person at the solicitors and ask for an update?

Sometimes when Im hitting a brick wall with companies I just phone up & ask if I could have a copy of their complaints procedure.

As dealing with a compliant is a right pita, I often find it opens doors that were previously shut tight

Hire your own solicitor and instruct them to write a letter to the current solicitor requesting an update because you are an interested party. You may get more joy from solicitor to solicitor contact.

The house is, presumably, jointly owned with your ex? So they have just as much right as you do to allow their mother to deal with the solicitor on their behalf.

Have you said "OK, so <x> is not available - but is there anybody else there I can speak to on this matter?"

That’s fine, I get that but surely as the house is jointly owned, so they not need permission from the both of us? I haven’t given her and nor would I give her permission to deal with anything on my behalf.

She isn't acting on your behalf.
Your ex has just as much right and say on everything as you do.
