    I used to work in McDonalds (or "Wimpy") in my youth and I have to say but you had to do something stupid to get sacked from there!!

    More along the lines of fiddling the till, stealing from the cooler room (the little brownies were very popular!), having ketchup/bbq sauce fights in the stockroom, telling someone to F off (that was a common one).

    You'll only get a bad/no reference if you've done monkey stuff as above (or if you are withholding information from the new employer). If it is *merely* health related (which I doubt, as managers tend to be less than clueless with HR matters) then you should expect a neutral or positive reference.

    As for your friend giving a reference, I don't see a problem if they are in a senior (to you) position and you absolutely DO NOT let on that you are friends (but many people fail at that eventually). You could also use them as a character reference, but be a bit *creative* with explaining how you know them.
