Hello!
We have had our offer accepted on a house, entry date of mid May. We have two boys, one in school.
We’re frst time buyers so I’m not sure how it all works. But oldest will be moving schools and they normally require proof of address. Will we get anything to say we are buying the house with the address on for me to be able to register him in school before we do the final bit?
Any advice regards this would be much appreciated

It's up to the school but you are counting your chickens several generations ahead if you are going to move his school just because you had an offer accepted.0

You are not buying with any certainty until exchange of contracts so you won!!!8217;t get anything meaningful before that.
Likewise, you do not have an entry date of mid May at this stage.
After exchange you would need to find out from the school what they will accept, perhaps a solicitor!!!8217;s letter.0 -

How do you mean? I will need to register him at the school before he can attend. He won't be moved until we actually move house and I'm not planning on registering him today but it will need to be done before our (planned) entry date as it is through a term.0 -

Sorry, I should have said 'planned' entry date. People move schools all the time so there must be some way to register before exchange. I will get in touch with the school.

What I mean is the school may not accept his registration ahead of you having a confirmed completion date which will likely only be a couple,of weeks at most before exchange. And that's a long way away from having had an offer accepted. .
If you haven't exchanged then I'd have though, but you need to contact the school to confirm, that they won't be interested in the fact that youve merely had an offer accepted, house purchases fall through all the time and even when they don't dates change, maybe the move won't take place until the summer holidays.
This would also depend how sought after this school is and how pressed for space. They may be happy to accept a provisional registration and juggle asndates change or firm up, or they may not be at all interested until at the very least you've exchanged and perhaps not even until you have completed and moved.0 -

Have you asked the school what evidence they will accept? I've only had to do it where clients wanted to apply in advance of child starting school, and in those cases they needed evidence of the purchase having completed. Would have thought there'd be lesser requirements where moving during term - plenty of children must move with little notice, so I expect there will at least be temporary arrangements possible where kids suddenly arrive within the catchment area.0 -

Thank you. That makes sense.
It's a small Borders town we are moving to so as far as I'm aware it has space. But I will get in touch with them and see what they advise.0 -

I will get in touch with them and see what they say. I was thinking there would be a system in place for moving.0 -
If its a small town with plenty of space, hopefully shouldn't be an issue, but only the school can say. Offers can be withdrawn at any time before exchange without penalty, they can also be rejected in favour of another offer (in england, depends whether your border house comes under english law or not). In cities with catchment areas it probably wouldn't be accepted by schools to avoid people making offers to get round catchment areas and then pulling out of the sale.0

Rightmove's school data shows if a school is usually oversubscribed or not. If it isn't, you are unlikely to have any great issues.0
