I don't have an issue with seeing a pipe or two at the back of my cupboards and the extra 3-4 inch depth for storage is worth more to me, + 99.9% of the time my kitchen unit doors are closed.
Different folks have different views - it all helps make the world a better place. I would chip in this. Nobody buys decent furniture and says I do not want a back panel in that chest of drawers, or that Welsh Dresser.
Then look at the dust and the drafts behind countless kitchen base units - you do not want that coming in amongst your stored items. But many kitchens combine this with mould, damp, spiders, cockroaches, rodents, whatever and having the back panel keeps all sorts out of the units.
Which means for the vast majority of folks should kitchen base units have all the services exposed at the back? No!0
