Future Energy bust, Green Star have no balance etc

Options
Hi all.

I'm a bit stuck/stressed at this now.

I was with Future Energy (who have now gone bust)

On 24th jan I began a switch to another provider (Avro) - this according to documents due to start on 23rd Feb

On 25th Future I heard on radio that Future Energy now gone bust (lucky i'd downloaded my quarterly bills just 2 days before)

On 30th January, Greenstar emailed saying they are going to be the replacement provider for Future Energy (and that they'd be in touch by the 6th Feb with tariff etc details)

I received that info on the 6th, matching the previous Future Energy tariff. It also gave links to create my web account. I tried and was unable to access. I then several days later emailed Greenstar my meter readings as of that day, as on reading it suggested that they needed a valid reading.

Heard nothing since, so figured I'd call them, GreenStar, up.
Provided my account info and ID....dialogue was a bit lost in translation unfortunately, but was told by them that they did not supply my Electricity, and only provide my Gas....presumably this is because Avro initiated the switch earlier than their stated day.

My last Future energy bill was over £250 credit from November, though including the payments since (but not including any of the fees for usage etc since over £460 credit)

So ok, it looks like the switch is partially complete to Avro, so asked about my credit. They have nothing on my account.

Popped on hold again for a while and the lady came back and said- apparently still getting info from Future Energy so no info on me (yet they seem to have already had my tariff and personal info!), and I should wait a couple of weeks

Anyone had similar or able to help? The letter GreenStar provided said my credit balance would be safe etc, but going by this, they've not got any info on me :(

It did take me some weeks to get my GBEnergy credit back after they went bust. The new supplier!!!8217;s priority will be to get existing customer accounts set up, and then they will look to creditors. Patience is needed and you may have to prompt them again in a few weeks.

  • Thanks Hengus.

It was very bad timing for me to begin my switch the day before they went bust.

I guess patience is a virtue....just something else on the list of jobs to sort out :)

I checked with Avro (the company I switched to)....and whilst it has direct debit set up, it still says its not connected yet and that they'll be in touch the day before the switch to ask for my first meter reading.....so no idea who is covering the electricity provision between my last bill/the going bust announcement/and GreenStar who were supposedly taking over but saying Avro have it :/

I'm owed money from them. I switched back in August/September. I had already raised a complaint with the Ombudsman before they went into administration.

I received a call from the Ombudsman last week says they had everything they needed and I would receive a decision this week.

Now I received an email saying they can't enforce their decision against Future Energy as they are in administration.

Looks like I've lost my money, even though it's supposed to be protected. I've called Green Star and they have no record of my account.

Credit balances even for customers who have switched are protected by Ofgem via the Consumer Levy. The EO is making the point that it cannot make a determination against a supplier that no longer exists which, presumably, might include an element of compensation. If you have evidence that Future Energy owes you money, then put your claim before the new supplier.

I guess I would need to reach a deadlock situation with the new supplier first?

has anyone received credit back from green star energy on their future energy accounts?
  • 3rd April I finally received an email stating my credit balance, after chasing it up by email several times

It said "The administrators for Future Energy have now finalised accounts and you should have received a final bill from them."

I've never received that email. I asked them for a copy for my records, so that I can compare the balance/and closing meter readings to ensure they matched that of the company I switched to

They replied saying I "would need to contact the Administrators for Future Energy for any account information."

No idea who the administrators themselves actually are.....they could be making any figure up

Had to call them afterwards to get the balance transferred. I only got around to calling them the other day, but was told it would take 10 days to receive that....so fingers crossed

Another case for keeping track of your energy bills and meter readings more frequently than once a quarter and for sending in readings at least monthly and not accepting estimated bills.

And above all, downloading and saving them yourself on a regular basis (at least monthly), so when they go bust, the system goes down or becomes corrupted you've still got evidence of the situation before it all went to pot.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Very true. Based on my quarterly statement, knowing how much I was in credit (around 270).....and only going on assumption that I used more the Nov-Jan time because of extra heating, it probably is about right....the final balance I think was around £230-240ish owing.

So long as I get that I'll be happy enough that its over with, though yous have reminded me so i've popped GreenStar a quick email asking them for the contact info for the administrators to chase this to see if do get anything
