Shrub/ tree root killer

I have a couple of shrub stumps that I need to kill off and hopefully dig out. What's best for this as the stumps and roots are deep and I can't get out with a fork and spade.

Just use a mattock, one of the ones with an axe head on the back... you'll get them out. If you're going to dig them out anyway there's no point trying to treat them with something, and wait a year to do it.0

I have used a treatment that I saw on youtube, and it worked.
Wrap tape around the remaining stump, so that you can place salt on the freshly cut stem. When I did this, it killed off an Elderberry tree.
This is another method.
