Sorry Boris but you're being ignorant. I'm not like Rain Man thank you very much.

Sorry omni but you're contradicting yourself. Do you have the care needs you claim for or not?

Poppy12345, you don't really understand Aspergers do you? Many of us like having our own space and doing our own thing. You've continually pick and chose bits of things I've said to attack me.
Yes, i do understand ASD thank you very much. My daughter has ASD. The things you are saying are condradicting the those PIP descriptors. Managing money and social aspects, which comes under comunicating verbally and engaging with others face to face. All of which you would have to face when traveling. To me this contradicts the reasons you claim PIP in the first place. If you're thinking of traveling alone like this then maybe you should think about reporting those changes.
  • omni8703....let me start by explaining that I have Autism...I understand the condition and how it can affect different people.

Now, you have stated that you get standard rate care for PiP due to budgeting and social needs.

    How do these affect you?

Think about the budgeting issues...can you manage your finances without help?...If you cannot, then how will you cope alone in a foreign country?...How will you cope with exchange rates?...how will you manage with working out what you can afford to spend each day?...How will you ensure that you will not end up stranded in a foreign country where you do not speak the language, with no funds left?....if none of this is a problem, then this is why some people could question the grounds on which you claim you have budgeting needs.

Now your social needs...You find it difficult communicating with people in your own language?...How do you intend coping in a country where they possibly do not speak English?...I realise you could do all your shopping in a supermarket -and thus minimise the need for communicating, but you will still need to engage with shop staff...and hotel/hostel/B&B staff...and transport staff.....how will you cope if you are unexpectedly taken ill and need to approach a doctor, or in a more serious scenario hospital staff?...how would you cope if you were forced to contact police?.....again, if none of the above is an issue for you, then people are going to question your claim for PiP.

I really think you need to look more deeply into your plans to travel abroad...possibly talking it over with parents and your psychologist...and accepting their advice.

Well it's either your dream is out of your reach at the moment, but maybe something you can look as a long term goal and work towards, or you are currently claiming for needs you don't have to the extend you are declaring.

How about travelling with somebody? I know you say you've social anxiety, but do you have a close friend or two that you'd enjoy travelling with? That might make it more doable safely
  • Omni8703 we are asked to be nice to new members however thats a two way thing just because you're not getting the exact answers you expect from some people (who are very helpful on here) is no reason to have a go at them.
    Thank you

Can you travel with someone else? If you take a support worker you'd need to pay them a wage plus all of their expenses so that's probably out of your budget but if you have a friend or know someone who is travelling to somewhere you're interested in visiting who'd let you tag along then it might work. Also I don't think 4 weeks is a good idea, your routine would be out of whack and you'd have to have a boat load of Savings to afford 4 weeks food and hotels abroad but you could do a few breaks spaced out and visit different places each time.
  • As a parent of a young adult with Asperger's, depression, paranoia and social anxiety, I would be very concerned if my son waanted to travel around Europe alone. If things did not go according to plan, I'm not confident that he could cope. He enjoys his own company, but I would want him to be with someone who can deal with unexpected situations.

You want to travel round Europe whilst claiming ESA and PIP. My son doesn't claim anything - he's still at college, so ESA wouldn't apply yet, but he is seeking full time employment for the end of summer term (and is currently at work in his part time job). He doesn't claim PIP and has never had DLA either. I really don't think that he would qualify under the PIP descriptors. If you receive PIP due to social needs and budgeting decisions, but are able to travel round Europe, then I doubt of you should be claiming it.

As someone who does have Aspergers also claiming pip (but with multiple conditions on top of Autism) I see it from both points I like to take a coach to Cambridge and I feel more comfortable there than I do in my own town. I take my very nice noise cancelling headphones and have no issues normally. However if the coach is late or someone sits behind me and kicks my chair 1 to many time times I freak out and can have a melt down which is bad enough here. I had to do the journey with my support worker at least 5 times before I could do it on my own and I end up doing the exact same walking loop, going to the exact same shops I like etc and I get the exact same time coach back home.

I am perfectly fine until I have that 1 day where I need the toilet before I get to my toilet stop and have to go off schedule to find 1. Or if it is unexpectedly busy even someone bumping into me or worse when I was counting money to get an ice cream someone snatched my wallet. And only thing I could do was call my support worker who was busy so then had to call my father to come pick me up which is all very well being an hour down the road but not so easy when abroad.

Like I said having autism doesnt mean you cant travel and I cant compare myself to you in fact I use to travel all the time until I had my accident which made me a lot worse with other brain injuries I felt at peace on a plane or a train etc but now I dont. Only you know what your comfortable in doing but trust me if you are in a strange place and you have a meltdown it can lead to a lot worse than here if I travel alone I have a special card that explains my disability to police officers but if you have a freak out moment which looks dangerous to other people it can lead to you being arrested. I dont say that to scare you I say that from an incident I had with my support worker in public police officer did what is my worst nightmare took me by arm to take me to one side and distressed me further. If it hadnt been for my support worker being there then I am fairly sure I would have been arrested.
Because I know how I can behave on a bad day it has put more fear into me trying new things everything I do now has been done accompanied by a suitable person several times before I try it alone even down to me doing my shopping every friday morning at 6am and the staff all knowing me
