Buying a pre reg car

Hi Martin says that you should get 20% of list price for a pre reg car. I am not sure what he means by list price. Does the list price mean the price on the ticket of the car new or the price on the ticket on the pre reg car itself, ie 20% of the new car price or 20% off pre reg price.

Many thanks

List price is the list price of the brand new car. So hes talking about 20% off that, not 20% off the advertised price of the pre-reg car.

Be very careful on pre-reg cars. Check https://www.broadspeed.com or https://www.drivethedeal.com to see what you can really buy a new car for, and then see how much you're really saving on the pre-reg

Also, pre-reg cars dont qualify for new car incentives from the manufacturer such as finance contributions / low rate / 0% finance deals and often are previous model year / previous registration plate / previous year.

Also they can be a spec you might otherwise not have wanted / have use for so the "saving" might not be a true saving.

Wise advice. I'd also include coast2coast.

Of our last four cars, two have been pre-reg or low mileage. Two have been new. In each case I was happy to buy a car up to a year old - but sometimes new works out better overall.

I was going to buy a nearly new Mazda 2 last year.

Rather than driving the 30+ miles to look at it I thought I'll go see what they look like in my local Mazda dealer 1st.

Ended up buying a brand new one, with colour and spec of choice for about £1500 less than the 2nd hand one was advertised for.

List price was £16,100, 2nd hand price was £15,000 price I ended up paying for a brand new one was £13,500

Did a check on same car a carwow a couple of weeks ago and biggest saving now is under £1,200

I must have been lucky with my timing, there were a few places advertising £2,500 savings when I bought mine.
  • Thank you for your help.
  • Hi Martin

Last Thursday 8 February, 4 adults broke in to our house while we were asleep and stole the keys to both Matthews car and my van plus the contents from down stair.
Both vehicles have not been found and the outlook is not good.

Regards the car this is straight forward and the insurance company are dealing with this in a professional way, as for the van which is my work shop / lively hood this is now becoming a different matter.

We purchased the new van from Arnold Clark Wigan

In August Last year we approached Arnold Clark for the cost of a new vehicle did not have an off the shelf vehicle to suit our specification, as we have requested some additions which meant it was a factory order, this is what we have done before with a previous vehicles . The van was purchased with a £500 pound deposit and a 12 weeks lead time due to the fact we requested rear cameras and more importantly twin sliding doors and the removal of the bulk head and replaced by driver protection cage – this was a non standard van.

The van arrived mid September and paid the remaining balance prior to delivery .
The vehicles was driven to us in Coppul and had around 5 miles on the clock.

As I mentioned we have had the van stolen and RSA insurance have carried out a HPI check and have informed us that the vehicle is second hand due to the fact that Arnold Clark was the former keeper.

It appears that Arnold Clark have without our knowledge preregistered the vehicle in their name “Arnold Clark finance ltd” and sold it to ourselves. We have never requested finance as it was stated it would be an outright purchase and the deposit reflect this.
We have contacted the Wigan branch and there reason “this is company standard” which i find , in correct.

It is clear they have done this without my consent and given the vehicle was built with our individual needs there should have never been any reason to do so.

As you can gather the insurance company will use this as a reason to not give back a like for like.

My first question is have Arnold Clark miss sold me the vehicle and or broken any laws in their actions
And do you have any suggestions.
Moving forward we have a rental van for two weeks and we are on our own after that .

Can you give me your thoughts and if you can possible suggest any body at your company who could give me some direction .

    Why?

    Have they said that?

Because most insurance policies have the requirement:
New for old cover on cars under 12 months old and you are the first and only registered keeper.

But surely you realised that the van was pre registered as soon as you got the V5. Why didn’t you address it then?
