Flooring and Painting job

Hi guys! In a couple of weeks I'll have to hire a builder to refurbish my first ever home. As FTB, I have no clue which quotes to expect, and I'm a bit afraid to be mugged off.
How much is usually the cost for laying down wooden floors (not the material, only the workmanship)? And how much is painting a medium sized room? The flat is a recent build in southern London, and I'm looking to replace the carpets both in the rooms and on the stairs with wooden floors.
