I was going to paint my wrought iron Gate and Fence with Hammerite in the summer however, has anybody done this and would it be better to spray it instead.

If you spray it, you'll waste a huge amount of paint.
Just clean it with a wire brush first then use a brush. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
Thanks, now i just have to decide between "Hammered Black" or "Smooth Black" Metal Paint.Enjoy everyday like it's your last!0

It may as well be smooth, I don't think you'll get much from the hammered effect on wrought iron gates.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Good you said to do it in summer, as using Hammerite would be like trying to spread tar, in the current temperatures.
And use this to save a few pennies

Also rather than brush application, it would be much easier and faster, with a disposable glove on your hand, first, with an old sock applying the paint, wearing it like a glove.

Painted plenty but can be very time consuming, depending on the condition of the area to be painted I have on accessions had to power wash the gate or fence first to remove any heavy build up of dirt or lichen (although I try to avoid power washing if possible). Then I wire brush to remove any loose paint and finally give it a rub down to remove any shine and to aid with adhesion of the new paint.
Then apply a direct to metal paint such as Hammerite which is the product I would use. Brush is my preferred application method although many do use glove or roller.
However, If the gates and fence are easily removed, to save on time I can take them to my local engineering company who shot blast and either spay or powder coat. If this is an option I give my customer the choice.
Naturally if its a diy job then painting in situ is cheapest but when employing someone to do the job properly then the price difference can be minimal.Thoughts:

I have been considering getting them professionally done but seems a hassle to get Gates and Fence unbolted and removed although not as time consuming as painting them.Enjoy everyday like it's your last!0
