OP just ask him to prove he complied with his obligations under the CCRs - including providing confirmation of the contract on a durable medium and (if the works started within the cancellation period) that he also obtained your express consent in a durable medium before starting the works.

Also, traders are supposed to give you the total price but if that isn't possible, they can instead give you how the price will be calculated (ie £x per room + £100 materials or £x per hour + £100 materials). Any change to that information is not effective unless expressly agreed between the consumer and trader.

Ok. Granted this is factually correct, the reality is if you start telling a trades man this !!!! its gonna get his back up and he's gonna tell you where to go.

Best thing op can do, rather than come here for advice first, is actually open up a dialogue with the guy. So tell him she's a bit surprised as the she was expecting a £900 bill as per the previous discussion. And maybe they can meet in the middle since it does sound like she was given an estimate and not a quote.

    Op said he confirmed.

Yes, confirmed what he had said before ...
    Roughly £300.

Yes - I guess that might be the plaster's argument. But the OP's account of the discussion/agreement is different.

The OP's version of events sounds very plausible - the tradesman said "roughly £300" before seeing a job, then confirmed a quote of £300 after seeing the job.

If it went to court, I imagine the OP's statement would be much clearer and detailed than their first post here.

The court decides on the 'balance of probabilities', which essentially means the most plausible explanation.

Well the trader didn't seem worried about getting the OP's back up by asking for more.

You kind of have to wonder at some of the attitudes on here though. Willing to overlook any mistake or deliberate failure by the trader to abide by their legal obligations but quite happy to kick the consumer for the slightest perceived mistake (with no legal obligation on them).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

No he's probably not worried as he probably doesn't know there's even a problem. In his head he probably gave an estimate and now issued a bill which is very close to the estimate.

But then why would he know these day.. since the internet seems to be the first port of call for a lot of people.

The tradesman said "roughly £300 per room and that includes materials" and now he's adding materials on top.

I say you point out that he said materials were included and pay him the £900.
