petition to save boss

the md has taken a decision to cut costs. Some management are to be made redundant. Would you sign a petition asking for the decision to be reconsidered?

No, only because I wouldn't see the point in it. The MD obviously needs to cut costs for a reason, so I doubt a signed petition is going to change that decision.

It’s seems a bit childish to me. If I were a boss needing to cut costs I’d be eager to know which employees had the spare time to organise it.

Companies generally don't make the decision to implement redundancies lightly. Legally speaking, it is roles made redundant, not individuals although that doesn't help those who are cut. Many companies have become top heavy over the year, with either simply too many managers or too many layers of management. Reducing the management structure is often the most effective way of reducing costs as managers are obviously paid more.
Unless the staff are offering to take pay cuts in order for the managers to be retained I don't think there is any point in either raising or signing a petition.

Signing such a petition gives them a ready made list for the next round of redundancies...

that would be severe puishment. signing could be seen as showing loyalty - which can be a desirable trait in employees

Your loyalty needs to be to the employer, not to a single staff member.

You must understand how bad an idea this is?
  • I wouldn't sign. It's not something that is likely to be changed by a petition. Giving the manager hope that they might keep their job isn't the best idea and it makes the people signing it look a bit naive.

Loyalty to who? Is the manager that you're supporting going to offer you a new job when you have both been made redundant, or do you think you should show some sort of loyalty to the person who currently pays your wages?

Well if they're not cutting management costs then they're going to look to make cuts elsewhere....
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
