Get dad from one council house borough to another?

  • Just an afterthought. If your dad would consider sheltered and it is suitable for him it is worth approaching local charitable sheltered housing setups, especially if there are any that you have a religious or other link with.

well, you learn something new everyday.

I agree that most areas of the UK have demand out stripping supply when it comes to social housing.

But when you get into the area of specialised accommodation ie for disabled, or older...or both........then maybe in some areas its a case that general needs applicants can't bid for them so the applicant pool is less, maybe non existent?.

did a bit of research. found that sanctuary housing assoc, one of the biggest in the country, advertises through rightmove

First of all housing associations do advertise on Rightmove, they are usually hard to let properties , ie first floor flats for over 60's or areas that people don't want. From my experience the OP should check out these and ready to let's for housing associations in his area. You may find that there are suitable things available. I speak from experience, home swapper is of course the other way.

Getting social housing is difficult to get the perfect property , but if you can compromise you may be lucky . Good luck with your dads situation.

I am not sure if the area connection applies everywhere so, OP, I would check the allocation policy of the council that you live in now. We do not have it. The only residential criteria is to have lived in the area for a certain period of time.

Agree re supply and demand. Our council (like many) is heavily overstretched on social housing.

Yes, I agree - it does depend on area. Some take a close family connection, others insist on residence.

However, from experience, sometimes (not always) Social Services can bypass usual criteria (I suppose, in certain cases, it's considered cheaper than providing outside care).

In this area, the housing list is massively oversubscribed, being a London borough, but there do seem to be a few more properties in the 'supported housing' section.

Elderly parents do tend to bring hard work and stress, and you have to just explore all avenues, even those you think you haven't got much chance with.
