Competency Question Help

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me?

I’m applying for a customer services role within the rail Industry.

As part of the application it asked the following question and I’m really stuck. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions using the STAR technique.

Give an example of when you have had to deal with a crisis?

Please detail the background to your example, any help you was given and what the outcome was.

I’m totally at a loss unless I’m missing something.

Thanks in advance.

Just answer the questions, why are you at a loss?
  • The star system is a fairly basis method, so do you have any relevant experience to that competency?
  • The suggestions need to be your own, not someone else's!

A crisis doesn't need to be a national disaster, but more a time when you've had to deal with a difficult situation under pressure and tight time constraints.
  • Sorry, but how would anybody on here know about a time when YOU had to deal with a crisis?

    A crisis could be anything...

A problem at home, what was it, how did you cope/resolve it what was the outcome.

It could be in a supermarket.
Being in a car with someone with road rage at you... it's all about how you cope with a problem. so problem solving without loosing your head. Staying calm when all around you are screaming.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
  • The other thing is, you don't need to have coped with it exceptionally. You can talk about what you learned from dealing with it.

    STAR means

    S(ituation)

Set the context for what needed to be done

    T(ask)

    What was required of YOU

    A(ctivity)

    What YOU actually did and

    R(esult)

What ACTUALLY happened following YOUR involvement.

The example does not need to be earth shattering BUT it does need to something YOU have done, because if you get called for interview they will ask you in detail about the competencies you have written and will quickly find out if you are fibbing !.

Perhaps this isn't the role for you then.
