  • After a horrendous year with Extra Energy I am now with Brilliant Energy - sheer joy. Good rates, efficient billing, flawless switching, no nonsenses about building up credits, and realistic DD rate which was left unchanged over the winter so they were actually in debit for that period. Can't comment on customer complaint handling - haven't had any complaints.

I swapped to Brilliant from Flow at the beginning of summer. I'd contacted them first to check if they would be ok with my low usage (I don't use gas for several months of the year in summer), and their chat app was quick and efficient to use. End result I was reassured that would be OK, and I swapped. The swap went smoothly, and I got emails as the process went through, such as asking for my opening readings etc. Quick and easy to do. Web site seems easy to use when entering monthly readings as well. Just had my first bill after 3 months, and it is quick and easy to read. In fact my readings were used exactly, even for zero gas usage over 3 months. This is how it should be, whatever your usage is, low or high, small customer or giant.
In contrast to Brilliant, my old supplier Flow were reluctant to let go. Although they took end of service readings OK, it took 2 months to get their final bill. I also got multiple phone calls from operators wanting to fix/sort things for me. In the end I blocked their calls.

Not sure quite what is going on at Brilliant Energy lately.

It appears they are trying to close it down, and start up again having transferred all their customers to a brand new, "partner" company, Euston Energy Ltd, that will trade as Northumbria Energy.

Something smells very fishy about the whole thing to me.

They are already backpeddling rapidly on threats to shift those of us on good value, fixed tariffs to this more expensive supplier/variable tariff mid-term.

But it looks like they will just price us out eventually, all of us who they proudly acclaim as 'loyal customers'. I don't quite follow how they can "value" us as loyal when their plan is to offload us onto another supplier, but I guess that may become clearer later.

In the meantime, I've done a quick comparison of the variable tariff offered by Northumbria Energy, and it's almost 40% more than I currently pay!
    (Source: Northumbria Energy website)

I've also done a comparison on the Brilliant Energy website, and it looks like I am currenty looking at about 65% price increase if I were to reamin with them at the end of my fixed tariff. There's little difference between their standard variable rate and their fixed tariff.

I'll keep this other thread with more info updated as I find out more

In the meantime, Ofgem needs to be aware of these shenanigans and investigate this supplier.
Ofgem will not normally get involved in customer complaints, but you can alert them to any untoward activity by emailing them at:

    consumeraffairs@ofgem.gov.uk

(I know prices have gone up in recent times, but a quick comparison today shows I could would only be expected to pay about 30% more elsewhere, compared to today.)

    Brilliant Energy is supplied by:
Brilliant Energy Supply Ltd (Company No.09263540)
Brilliant Energy Supply Ltd is 100% owned by:
Brilliant Energy Services Ltd (Company No. 04883104)

In regards Brilliant Energy Services Ltd
Next accounts made up to 31 December 2017, due by 30 September 2018
    i.e. Accounts overdue

As a result, on 27-Nov-2018, notice was given by the Registrar of Companies of the intended compulsory strike off of this company
    - however that was discontinued on 10-Jan-2019
(but the accounts have still not been delivered up)

Looks like something similar happened the year before too.

Further to post#4, I have an email from the company secretary that effectively states that Brilliant Energy will no longer be offering any more competitive tariffs (although it now promises to honour any existing Brilliant Energy tariff until expiry)

It says that the other supplier, Northumbria Energy will always offer a lower cost tariff than Brilliant Energy ever will in future.

If that isn't the writing on the wall for Brilliant Energy as an energy supplier, I don't know what is.

It goes without saying, always consult a comparison site to find the best supplier/tariff(s) for you. :money:
