So thinking about this from just a compers view.

Does this mean not only are we going to get 100s of emails from the companies we are subscribed too asking if we want to continue receiving their newsletters but we will also get an email after almost all of the competitions we enter asking the same and telling us what they are using our data for?

In my humble opinion the only information a company running a competition should need from us is our name and email address and they should only ask for more information if we are lucky enough to win.

No - the data must be available at the point of signup - i.e. a link to their privacy policy (or maybe T&Cs)

Agreed - unless they ask you to opt-in to marketing material, they can't add you to their mailing lists. They can only use your details to administer the prize. Not everyone runs a competition to gain newsletter signups. Some of it is promotional/pr stuff. We should be safe with those! ;)

I suppose it is always possible that there could be a new wave of competitions because the companies think that they will soften the blow of asking us to opt in by wrapping it up with a competition.

    Tell me about it

I work as a fundraiser in a Hospice and it is causing a massive amount of work in preparation of it coming in

    I totally sympathise.

We have paper files which we have to keep for something like 40 years. We have no idea whose details might be in those files apart from the name on the outside.

The only upside is that there is no way they are going to be able to police this effectively.
