I suspect airlines and agents pass the responsibility to passengers to find out the information themselves so they cannot be accused of giving incorrect information...(for anyone to give accurate information they would need to know what countries you have visited in the past, your criminal history etc)

    You are absolutely correct

This should answer the question - mind the health warning, it's not an official US Government webpage, so don't follow the link to apply for an ESTA.

    https://www.esta.co.uk/transit.html

    Official website here.

If there is any doubt, get it. It's a faff & a hassle but a load better than having a holiday mangled by anxious immigration officials with Trump dictated targets...
Hoping the peace of mind is worth the cost of a couple of exotic margueritas each?! Happy hols!

No. It takes about 10 minutes. Most people get an acknowledgement immediately.

Occasionally it says pending; if that happens you should check their website, not expect an email.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)

Yes agreed so will get us each an ESTA next week. As you say the peace of mind is worth the cost of a couple of drinks but I'm sure we will be able to have some and relax

There isn't any doubt - if you are arriving by air or sea to the US and intend to enter using the VWP, you need an ESTA. Even if it's only to catch a connecting flight and you won't even leave the airport.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

read post 7 first, and check your eligibility.
You need either an ESTA or a visa.
Nobody but yourselves can check which you are eligible for.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Peace of mind is sorting it out today just in case it's refused and you have to apply for a visa.

An ESTA lasts for 2 years. And whilst it is unusual for anyone who qualifies not to be granted an ESTA, there is always that possibility and it is not unheard of. In that case you normally will need to go through the VISA application procedure including the appointment and interview at the US Embassy. That can take a few weeks. So if your trip is soon I would suggest that you apply immediately, just for the comfort factor of knowing you are OK if nothing else.

As said above, only apply for an ESTA via the official site (link posted above). If you are asked to pay anything other than $14 (yes you pay in dollars not £sterling) you are not on the correct site, so close down and start again using the official site.

Applied yesterday and went through the process. as you said it gave us a pending acknowledgement.
Checked website this morning and we are approved. Again as you said we didn't get an email.
Anyway all's well that ends well so thanks again to everyone
