No he is not splitting the video. There are 2 DVI-D channels. The fact that the second monitor only has the taskbar shows that it is working correctly in extended mode.

To see an app open on the 2nd display. Open it as normal then drag it onto the 2nd monitor. When you close it, it should then remember it's last position and re-open there. If you want other icons on your 2nd desktop then just drag them across. It doesn't do it automatically.

    Thanks

Yes, the 2nd monitor only has the taskbar. So, from what you said, i guess extended mode is working correctly?

Also the ONLY way to get something to display on monitor 2 is to drag it across from monitor 1 then?

I will use "google chrome" and "malwarebytes" as an example......

If i drag the google chrome icon from monitor 1 onto monitor 2. I then lose the icon on monitor 1?!
So now i can ONLY access chrome from monitor 2
So everytime i want to open a webpage on monitor 1.....i have to drag the icon back or drag the whole page back across?

What i don't understand is why I can't download programs, such as malwarebytes, and then open that program on whatever monitor my mouse is located in

It seems like i either have to forever open it on monitor 1 or monitor 2 and the only way to do it, is to drag the program into each screen......but then i am stuck with the program only working on that screen?!

Because Windows doesn't work that way.

As said earlier ... open the application, drag it to your preferred monitor, use it, close it. Next time you open it then it should remember that last monitor location and open there.

Surely if i want something to open in the 2nd monitor and i select it from that monitor it should open there?!

on my extended setup if i open anything from the taskbar on monitor 2 it opens on monitor 1 and i drag it across to monitor 2. i alway thought it was supposed to work like that?

^^ This is the answer you need.

Open your stuff - move it to your preferred location - windows will remember and open in the same place next time

Thanks, so this is the only way then?

EG. If i close chrome on monitor 2, then the next time i open chrome on monitor 1....it will only ever open on monitor 2....until i drag it back?

Seems very limited. I thought it would just open a program in whatever screen my mouse was located in. Which would be much simpler and easier for the user?

Not sure mate, this is the first time i've had a dual monitor set up

Can i definitely eliminate that this is anything to do with what cables i am using?

Because i was going to return the two DISPLAYPORT cables i bought as the monitors came with the DVI cables and i had that DMS-59 port to DVI splitter cable plugged into the PC

Is it safe to send the Displayport cables back, as this is definitely not the issue?

    It is entirely logical ..
You are using extended desktop, which effectively means you are using 2 monitors side by side as if they were one long monitor.

It has always been windows behaviour to open a program in the same location on the screen and with the same sized window that it was using when it was last closed.

Stop thinking of them as seperate screens.
You now have one long screen

(perhaps you are being cofused because there are 2 task bars, one on each screen - which never used to be the case in W7 )

    I see, thanks.

I guess what i "wanted" was a separate desktop on each screen/monitor and for each screen to behave independent from each other, just by me scrolling the mouse over

It doesn't look like this is possible, sadly. Someone else has suggested a 3rd party program called "displayfusion" which i will have a look into later

One thing that is getting me is that NVIDIA has its own NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL and even has something called "desktop manager". Which i have had a play around with but so far im unable to get it to work how i want.

It "feels" like this should be possible....or am i way off the mark with that thinking?
