Reference numbers for chaps etc into NSI account

Options
Hello,

Has anyone had problems with banks not understanding the
concept of Account No and Reference No when it comes to sending money to buildings societies and or institutions like Ns & I?

I instructed my bank to carry out a transfer but they did not have a reference entry on their electronic template.
So they put sort code, account no and the reference was put in a box called "message to beneficiary". Does not sound right to me.

the reference is required by NS & I to credit the correct account.

I won't know for a couple of days if the transaction was successful. Worst case scenario do you think the money will bounce back automatically or do the likes of NS & I hold it in a suspense account ?

Anyone had similar issues before?

thanks

Marco, when I get onto my other computer later I will see if I have a record of what I did to transfer money into a NS&I account when I sold my house in 2014.

    an update.

The money arrived but NS & I told me the back office had to manually link the payment to my account.

It appears that HSBC do not have a field for "reference" and just put the reference number in another box named message to beneficiary. There as no guarantee this would work every time.

I noticed this problem when arranging standing order. They only have sort code and acc number but not box for reference.
Is it possible that an international bank like this does not have proper banking templates available?

I have an account with Santander and they do have a reference box available for payments.

Time to reduce my banking with HSBC I think.
  • Every bank I have done business with allows, nay, insists on some kind of payment reference.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
