Affordable Housing - Current Rent Arrears

HI Everyone

I just wanted to see if anyone could help me with my current situ? I have been on the affordable housing list for over 3 years, i currently rent privately and have done for the past 5 years with the help of housing benefit top ups. My landlords last year up'd our rent which lead us to fail behind for a few months. We have been able to pay the full rental each month for the past 5/6 months however it is a real stretch and the arrears that we built up prior are still there as we dont have the funds to pay these back as well as the rent each month. My worry is we may be about to be offered a property we have bidded on and the next stage is to be assessed, will the fact that i have rental arrears at my current property stop me from being offered a house?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Kind Regards

It depends on your council's policy. I assume you mean social housing rather than 'affordable' housing? Prepare a list of monthly incomings and outgoings so you can explain the arrears. This might help you.

Get advice from the CAB. In case you don't get this property, have you tried the debt free wannabe board to see if you can adjust your budget (with the above list of incomings and outgoings)? Are you positive you have applied for all benefits? Have you tried to get a discretionary housing payment to help pay off some of the arrears?

The CAB might help advise you with all of the above.
