Update iphone app (but not OTA or via iTunes)?

I've never liked updating OTA ever since i got stung with a bad update years ago.
Right now i'm trying to update some apps but it just keeps freezing (the progress bar).
Is there a non-jailbroken way to update the apps another way? I've updated the apps in my iTunes library, i've extracted the old apps from the recycle bin to a safe apps folder in case the updates don't work so well (for example, i don't like the new BBC News app layout so i deleted it & put the old one back on), i just need to have a way of putting the new updated apps on the phone to replace the old existing ones already on there.
