HELP!! 2 MPAN numbers

Hi,
I’m needing some advise and help :-(

I have an ongoing saga with NPower and wanting to change my meter, I will explain a little of the ongoing issue.

I live in a property that is all electric with a pre payment meter

Apparently I have 2 MPAN numbers and since 2011 apparently they have not charged me for one of the meters according to them my General Electric runs from one meter and my storage heaters from the other, they decided this in 2011 and apparently adjusted My meter so when I topped up my prepay key it would take money off towards the other, fair enough all sorted.... well so I thought. So roll on to the beginning of 2017 I get a bill land the doorstep for nearly 4K!!! Apparently they never set the meter up properly in 2011.

Long story back and forth between NPower they say they will write all of the debt off apart from £700 apparently this equates to 300 and odd quid for the last 12 months debt and an estimate of the future debt, needless to say I just want a normal meter which they said i can do but many lose my heating If I change the meter, apparently they do not know whether I Am set up for economy 7 or 10 and said if I change the meter I will need an electrician to come change how my heating is set up as they don’t know which I have.

TO be honest I am totally confused by it all, they have started taking £17 a week off my meter towards this 700 quid debt on top of the 130 quid I already put on taking the amount I need to top upto 198 per month, I work 12hrs a day so hardly use a lot of electric, my next door neighbour is home 24hrs a day and only payable 86 quid a month, she only has a smart meter with storage heaters.
I feel like they are trying to rip me off and don’t know where to go as I now don’t trust them to put the new meter in and charge me correctly for it, let alone it may not even be compatable with my storage heating.

ANy advise would really help on whether changing the meter would lose my heating and what I would need to do to prevent this I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

  • There is a really high chance that if your meter change is not done correctly it could affect your heating. It should be possible to run storage heating off a standard two rate economy 7 or economy 10 meter but it needs to be connected correctly.

I am also with NPower and have a heatwise meter with two MPANs and a total of five registers so I feel your pain. NPower don't seem to have the first clue how it all works which makes getting a straight answer out of them pretty impossible. I would love to get a simpler set up but need to be sure that I can keep the house heated.

There is very little support for people with these complex metering set ups. Ofgem recognise this and even acknowledge that with this kind of set up are disadvantaged by their set up but they don't do anything about it which is pretty poor as a disproportionate amount of people with these kind of set ups are already more vulnerable.

    What an awful mess.

I don't think I can help you but I also have 2 MPANs. My situation is sort of straight forward - one has a live supply and the other doesn't. I've been in touch with my power distributor and requested they remove the supply - they weren't keen but I explained that it has mucked up my ability to switch twice now.

I hope you get yours sorted. I did think unbilled energy couldn't be back dated but I don't know the timeframes involved, etc.
