Thanks Z, it helps and hinders tbh.
    Alot of information.

I already have home batteries and an ev.
I have a good amount of solar pv but arranged in the centre on the house roof, leaving the top and bottom clear.

I'm not going onto the roof, so I'd potentially need a company to move the pv down(or up) the roof to let the thermal panels in.

I can only do that if I can guarantee a decent reduction in my gas consumption of 14mwh a year.

The article suggests thermal is almost dead due to pv prices falling.

Though it has changed my mind from flat panels to evacuated tubes.... I figured the flats would be more robust, but the tubes will be better suited to uk.

It's been in operation a month now during which time our gas consumption has dropped to about half of the previous lowest summertime figure recorded of 89 kWh's.
Of the 45 kWh's consumed the majority was probably due to the gas hob, but a smaller proportion perhaps due to DHW drawn off by use of the sink in the en suite, plus some from leaving the pre heat option on the combi boiler operational!
With that now de-activated we'll see what difference might occur when taking next months figures.
At the commencement of this thread I'd thought no further than what car to purchase next. What a journey it's been and continues to this day as we've now set our sights on relying entirely on renewable energy for all our heating, transportation and domestic needs.
If we make it through the coming winter without resorting to the gas combi boiler then we've only to replace the gas hob to complete another step along the way.:)
Looks like we're through the worst of winter now so the gas combi can be considered surplus to requirements. Either way I've now replaced the gas hob with an induction version and the gas !!!!!! by the meter is now turned to the off position!
Below are the figures of energy consumed in the last two winters, 2018/19 being mostly gas, with the latter mostly electric.
Combined total of gas and elec Nov to March inc of winter 2018/19 = 5035 kWh's(3625 Gas). £357.61.
    For the same period 2019/20 = 2918 kWh's(291 Gas). £408.07.
Just to complicate matters a little the figures include consumption for the EV in each case for which I've no separate monthly figures for 2018. In the five relevant months of 19/20 this amounted to 496 kWh's(£64.18).
So looks like there is no finacial gain to be made, but no great loss either as the daily standing charge for gas amounting to £71 annually will be saved once the supply is terminated.
Sadly our supplier, Bulb, has just increased the price of electicity while reducing that of gas. So with a saving of around 10% offered by another supplier it looks like our time with Bulb is coming to an end!

Yeah ive now left bulb for octopus. Will see how agile works out.
It looks like as long as you dont use the leccy between 4pm and 7pm, your bills will be around half.

So heating the thermal store in winter would be cheaper on agile, as you can do it when leccy is cheapest.

My problem will be trying to convince the wife not to use the electric shower between 4pm and 7pm
