Hyundai i40 intermittent sensor malfunction

Options
A couple of months ago a continuous droning noise accompanied the use of the reversing camera .Also the front and back sensors stopped working. After a week or so and fiddling with the button that controls the sensors on/off, the noise went away and the sensors started working normally again.
Now the noise has returned and the sensors have cease to function again. Before contacting the dealer, I wondered if anyone has come across this problem and know how to fix it permanently. I mentioned the sensor fault at the dealer once previously and they said that the front ones were not designed to work when going forwards - only when reversing. The fault was rectified that time after they fitted a new camera which was not working properly as well.

I'd be suspicious of that. I don't see the point of having front sensors that do not work going forwards. From experience of other cars they should either be triggered by moving at low speed, or by pressing a button in addition to being triggered by selecting reverse. However, it is possible that Hyundai have been lazy.

I've got a Kia, where the front sensors aren't active in normal driving, only when the car is, or has been, in Reverse - so if it's like that, it'll be normal operation, if a little confusing - for example, don't rely on the front sensors when just driving into a space - they won't activate!
  • Thanks for comments. I have had my Hyundai for 3 years and most of that time I have had no problem with the sensors beeping as I go forwards or reverse back. Since posting the droning noise is not happening when the camera goes on for reverse. As I said....intermittent.

Agreed, why have front sensors that only work when you are reversing seems pointless to me, my Honda's front sensors certainly work when going forward.

I believe the assumption is that you are assumed to be capable of looking out of the windscreen fairly easily while moving forwards... The front sensors warn you if you're likely to clonk something with the front as it swings sideways as you concentrate on the back, reversing as you parallel-park.
