7000 deleted emails trying to download

Options
AVG caught a virus attachment on an incoming email and quarantined it. Perhaps it's a coincidence but shortly thereafter thousands of old deleted emails downloaded to my wife's laptop. It was easy to delete these again using Control-A albeit a nuisance.
However... My wife has an old iPhone 3GS and messages want to download on that (49 at a time). There is no quick way that i know of to delete these messages except one by one each time a new batch downloads. As there are 7000+ waiting, I am desperate to know if there is anything that can be done. Help please
