unpaid water bill

I moved into a Flat 3 weeks ago and got my meter readings from a letting agency. I couldn!!!8217;t verify them immediately because all meters are locked in one place and only a caretaker has the key. Unfortunately, I called a water supplier and opened an account with those meter readings. A week ago, I asked the caretaker to write down my meter readings. The water meter readings is 500 higher!! I asked to read again yesterday, and it is 501 higher, now. What can I do in this situation?

Surely you are responsible for the meters and should be able to access whenever necessary !!!128533;

Call the water company and explain. They should send somebody out to read the meter to confirm what the figure is now, and they will then look into whether the closing reading you were given (and which they may have been given too) was incorrect.

Were they not checked and recorded during your inventory check on the day the tenancy started?

I also echo agrinnall's advice - I'm sure it won't be too difficult for them to believe that you haven't used 500 in 3 weeks.

Its possible he read the wrong meter. In future ask the caretaker to open the cupboard so you can read the meters yourself.

Given I use 60m3 a year in a 4 bed house you certainly haven't used 500! Unless all the flats are served off 1 meter and that's the reading he's given you. A leak of that magnitude would be showing somewhere otherwise!

Ask to have a key for access as surely that's your right as a flat owner/tenant?
