Front Coil spring

My front o/s snapped July last year. I bought the car brand new so knew the history of the car, careful owner and it snapped going over those stupid speed humps private land owners seem to fit everywhere.
I got both front replaced using genuine FMC coil springs at my local garage for £208 total.0 -
Had one of the coil springs replaced on my 207 late last year for £80 at a local indie garage.
The other has started making the same sound i.e snapped so I assume the other needs doing now too.0 -
Agree with the above that there should be change out of £100 for one. A PAIR of springs is no more than around £40, its no more than an hour per side to change them. Call it £50/hr labour and you're looking at change out of £150 for both to be done.
£208 for one and even £310 for both is just robbing you blind. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The cheap garage will likely do it bodger style, by taking the nut off the strut top and letting the suspension fly apart, then use the weight of the car to get it back together.
This doesn't affect the alignment of anything.
The expensive garage is probably doing it "by the book" removing the strut and using spring compressors. This can affect the steering alignment so it needs checking and cost more.
I'd have the £90 one (ask them the price of a pair, the second one usually snaps soon after the first anyway)
You are damn right rude to suggest the cheaper garage will bodge it. There are plenty of garages that charge a modest labour charge and conduct work to even better standards than the likes of dealerships.
The majority of consumers prefer to use local independent garages who charge modest prices and have generations of family who continue to use the same place.
Anyhow, I would suggest both are replaced. You can get one side done and it may be no bother, but is normally subjective to the vehicle. The vehicles age/mileage can be a factor in the decision, or just simply the preference of the person who owns the vehicle.
If you want to check the credibility of a garage, it can help if they are !!!8216;Trust My Garage!!!8217; approved or part of any other code of practice.

Cross reference with Google if you like and you can!!!8217;t go wrong with an independent doing things the right way and not charging an arm and a leg, plus additional !!!8216;seevices!!!8217; such as a pointless 4 wheel alignment and health check etc.0 -
Just had both front done, £230. Potholes and speed bumps GRRRR!
Worth mentioning that some cars with stiffened lowered springs are a bit more expensive, however if you have a std setup don't just get the lower springs as the dampers will probably not be the same.
Mine made the classic "Clunking" noise, but no noticeable effect on handling.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
