Window handle screw goes round & round

A screw for a upvc window handle just goes round and round. Anyone have any ideas what I could use so the screw will tighten up ?

Do you mean a handle like this:-

If so they are normally fitted with a metric thread screw (bolt), M5 I believe. If these keep turning and not tightening then it either means the bolt has sheared or the thread has stripped, or possibly that the bolt is not engaged in the 'nut' part within the window frame. At a push someone has used a short bolt that doesn't reach the nut?

Have you tried taking the screw/bolt out completely to have a look? A picture might help
