When Dad tries to open Microsoft Word the computer crashes and says something about not having enough memory to run this programme. How can I fix this problem, what do I need to do? He is running Windows 98.

Please help if you can!!

Thanks!

  • Jo, is this a new installation of word, or has your dad been able to use it before????
I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

what size ram memory has the PC got ??

does it do it all the time or only after the pc has been in use for a while ??

you can do a repair of word from the original CD if it looks like the program is the cause.

I had this problem too. I think the solution used to be to delete the normal.dot file (you can find it from the search facility on your computer), which has somehow got damaged. This, if my memory serves me correctly, should stop the crashing. PS. I don't think you can do any damage by deleting this file, since it will simply recreate itself.

Thanks for responding! I think 4Gb as it is an old computer but there is supposed to be around about half of the memory left.

It does it all the time!

Thanks for responding! Might try this when I am at Mum & Dads either tomorrow or over the weekend!

Jolly Roger's advice is spot on, but you should rename the normal.dot file normal.old, rather than delete it. Word will then recreate the normal.dot file as good as new and this should solve the out of memory message. this happened to me a few times on my old Dell PC (bad memories) running W98SE/ Word 200.
To locate the normal.dot file just do a search under the 'Find' function on the Start menu.

Thanks for responding! Will try your suggestion when I am at his computer again.
