We started looking around the Glossop area and really fell in love with it. It's very similar, if a little more "League of Gentlemen" in some parts. Very affordable too.

The commute is of course a total nightmare, but it's somewhat more convenient than Disley was for us both, especially regarding public transport. In terms of mileage, it's a fair bit shorter too. We've also been advised about the bypass (which to be fair, there have been talks of for a least a billion years) so I can see room for an increase in house prices in the next few years.

We have just purchased a property in Mottram, and although the traffic is horrible, we are very much hoping the bypass will get the go ahead, and we may be lucky and see a decent rise in the value of our home.
Regardless of this though, the space we have got for the money is fantastic, and we are very happy with our decision.

Thank you so much for your response. Mottram is one of the places we were looking at! :D

If you can give any further tips or info about your commute, that'd be great. I work in North Manchester and reckon it'd be between 40mins - 1 hour most evenings. Would you say that's realistic?

Denton Island fills me with dread even on a quiet evening, so I'm really worried about having to tackle it twice a day at rush hour :(

I'd hate commuting, love driving other than that.
Worked at 4 locations in 40 years, my travel distances have been
    2.5 miles e/w, 3 miles e/w, 0.6 miles e/w, currently 1.2 miles e/w.
    Been very lucky.

We're in Glossop, i work at Manchester Uni and husband in Stretford. When he had a job elsewhere, I used to go by train which took around an hour from station to desk. We drive now as we go together, we leave at 7 and husband gets to his desk about 8.20 after dropping me off.

Mottram Moor is the worst problem in the morning, the queue to come off the M67 in the evening.

The commute is worth it for us to live in a nice town with easy access to the hills. For what it's worth, i have just finished mat leave and found it a lovely place to be with a baby.

Thank you so much for this! We're almost household twins, as my boyfriend works for the university and as I said, I work in the North.

Your reasons for living there are identical to ours as well - we're hoping to start a family soon and love the access to the hills. It's also marginally closer to my family which is a plus.

It's reassuring to know that this is doable - I know it's not an ideal commute, but my plan was to leave earlier anyway to at least be throught Mottram for 7.15am.

    Thanks again :D

You're welcome. I won't lie, the traffic is awful some days!

I was living in the Highlands of Scotland but working, contractor, in Belgium, Brussels: 3 days a week & small-flat paid-for. Drive/Train to Inverness or Glasgow, fly Brussels.

    Do I win?

    Highest ever per day rate.

You may just have beaten my weekly commute from the New Forest to Dublin from a few years ago. :)

We have only been living there a week, but so far my morning commute, to Oldham, takes me about 30 mins. I go down the M67 as far as Hyde, and then go through Dukinfield and Ashton. I am meaning to try going via the M60 but suspect at 07.30, Denton island will be a nightmare!

Coming home takes about 45 mins, via M60, the main problem being the queue at the end of the M67, which has taken me about 15-20 mins to travel about 500m to Hyde Road. I again plan on trying a different route, which would probably take me through Stalybridge or through Dukinfield and then up Matley Lane, to try and avoid the M67. I don't anticipate this will save much time though, but 45 mins is not too bad, get home just after 5pm.

My wife works at RMCH so her commute may be more difficult, but still on maternity at present, so cant advise on that.

And although I previously stated I was hoping the bypass would ease the traffic, after a week, I am beginning to love the view from our back garden which would be ruined by the bypass!

I am already beginning to accept the traffic, so reckon we will be happy either way.
