Finance to study in the United States

My son is looking at studying sport in the US, but we are struggling to fund the yearly fees.
We are short by about $5,000 per year, for a 4 year period and I have heard the some corporations offer general untied scholarships, that work in the same way as student loans over here, but despite extensive research I have not been able to find any information.
I would be most grateful if anyone has any information to help us.

If he is really good then the university will offer him a scholarship.

Otherwise, he should study in the UK.

We have had an offer from the second ranked university in the whole of the US for rugby union, my sons sport, so he is good enough, but unfortunately we are not wealthy enough to fund the difference between the fees, $40.000 per year, the university scholorship of $20,000 per year, and our maximum budget we can afford, $15,000 per year.
That is why I was asking specifically for some information about corporate funding of $5,000 per year to allow my son to fulfill his dream, and potential.

Have you allowed for the money your son will earn from a part time job? I believe that's how most American students help pay their fees.

Out of curiosity...
Why does your son need to study in the USA in order to "fulfill his dream, and potential" ?
Apart from the experience of living abroad, what is it you think he'll get in return for this enormous expense that he wouldn't get studying and playing for a university team in the UK?

Studying abroad sounds great in theory but the huge cost really needs to be pragmatically weighed against both the long term benefits and the available alternatives.

Surely the USA can't be the best place to study Rugby Union? New Zealand should be better.

Thanks for the replys and advice.
As I said originally we have done extensive research, and as parents my wife and I are prepared to support our children as much as we can, which does include financial support to a level we are able.
If anyone does have any information about what I asked about in the first place, non-tied corporate funding/scholorship to study abroad, I would really appreciate it.

I'm aware of another poster on this site who has a son studying in the U.S. (no idea what subject) and initially had a sponsor. Son lost that sponsor after the first year or so, the family have had to find the shortfall themselves. If you do find funding, please make sure it's for the whole duration if losing it before the study period is up would not be affordable for you and cause either financial hardship or mean your son being unable to continue his studies.

Sorry, I can't help you with suggestions on how to find funding but hope you can work something out.

Without knowing more about what it is that he intends to study it's a bit difficult to give a sensibke comment, but if his primary interest is in paying rugby at a professional level I'd have thought that studying somewhere like Loughborough would be the most sensible option.

Seconded. Loughborough Students regularly supply players to teams such as my own, Nottingham, and bigger teams such as Leicester Tigers (I believe there is some sort of alliance there)
I’m a massive rugby fan and I’m scratching my head as to why he would want to go to America to study it where it is very much a minority sport. I know one of the Academy guys from Tigers went to study in America but his was an athletics scholarship.
I know quite a lot about uni rugby and how the pro teams pick up the players and they do recruit heavily from the uni teams but it’s not easy by a long chalk. If he wants to play pro in the UK he might struggle having studied abroad. Of course there are ways and means in at an older level but it’s way more difficult. He won’t just be able to return from America and expect to stroll into a pro contract as sadly it doesn’t work like that.
I sponsor a guy who is in the Academy for a top Premiership team and he was taken straight from school. He works very hard indeed and he’s had to sacrifice one heck of a lot to get where he is right now. I know others who have shone for their uni team and got picked up by pro clubs, and I know a handful who got picked up from some obscure amateur team and are now pro. However I can’t stress enough that University rugby teams are very fertile breeding grounds for some pro clubs! Not all Universities either- I know Nottingham Trent and Loughborough definitely are and also Northumbria has produced several Newcastle Falcons players so again homework is required.

I get 100% what you’re saying but on the other hand it peturbs me greatly. I have seen first hand what happens when dreams are crushed and it’s heartbreaking. Would not want that to happen to your son. You may have done your research but perhaps if your son wants to play pro speaking to a few ex pros may be beneficial.
