I think with hotels.com you pay upfront in GBP, but with booking.com you usually pay on arrival or whatever the hotel's policy is, in the hotel's currency.

Are you sure the booking.com price isn't EUR? And are they the same cancellation conditions?

If the bookings are both pay now then the price in GBP is relevant. If either booking is pay later at the property then the price in EUR is relevant.

I've just tried a booking on booking.com and the price is charged in EUR. As booking.com usually work.

It says "You will pay the property in the property's local currency (€). The displayed amount (in GBP) is indicative and based on the exchange rate at the time of booking."

I think hotels.com charge in GBP.
