Two hpi reports show different info

Options
We bought a car privately last year, did an Autotrader Experian check on it and it was all clear, no outstanding finance. We are trying to sell the car now and someone has enquired as to the outstanding finance, we did an RAC check out of interest and there is Blackhorse finance from 2012 (48 months)on the car.

Why didn't this show on the Experian check?
Am I at risk of losing the car?
Am I protected by the Experian check I paid for?

  • 1. No idea, but HPI are better than Experian
    2. No, as you were not aware of the finance when you bought it (google car innocent purchaser)
    3. Possibly but they will quite likely have a get out clause

    a. If it's 48 months on from 2012 then that takes us to 2016 so it's probably paid off by now unless in default - these things can stay on the HPI register for ages. Either way it's not your problem if you are an innocent purchaser.

    b. You need to call the finance co and ask if they still have any interest in the car. If they do, explain that you bought it (whenever) and were unaware and that since you are n innocent purchaser you would like clear title to the car. It will be a faff around but you will get it.

If they no longer have an interest in the car then ask for a letter saying so and ask them to remove it from HPI register.

Thanks that's reassuring. Going to contact them tomorrow.
