What can I do about faulty trainers?

I bought some Geox branded trainers from JohnLewis.com in October 2016. They sat in their box and I didn't wear them until Christmas Day 2017. The second time I wore them, the inner sole on the right trainer peeled up, halfway up inside the shoe.
I took them back to a John Lewis branch and the lady I spoke to said, even though I had only worn them twice, it was too long after I'd bought them (over a year) for any recourse. They said I should take the trainers to a Geox shop.
I believe the trainers are faulty as the inner sole came up after only wearing the trainers twice.
I also thought that it was the retailer (John Lewis), rather than the manufacturer (Geox) who were responsible for any faulty goods.
Thank you!

Geox are one of the affected brands.
It is the retailer that is responsible, but given the length of time you've had them you're going to struggle to get anywhere. Email customer service, send pictures that demonstrate that the shoes are otherwise as new, get it escalated and they might offer a remedy.0 -
Thanks very much for your reply. They clearly look hardly worn. I will email John Lewis customer service with photos.0
