Control Direct Debit Yourself

A lot of complaints on this energy forum relate to companies increasing direct debits when the customer thinks there's no need. At Bulb you can change your direct debit amount (and day it's taken) up or down yourself on their website with a couple of simple key taps. I haven't been with them long and I'm still well in credit from referrals so not sure what the limits are for how much you can lower it but I'd be interested to know whether many other companies allow you a similar level of control.

E.oN allows the consumer to adjust the monthly DD payment online but within limits.
  • npower has any adjustment system too but it isn't as relaxed as the E.ON one. It decides the increase or decrease for you.
  • EDF allow you to change the amount but do check that it is justified.

I found that they reduced it without reason, they were very happy to put it back up:D

If you do this by phone they do ask if you approve.

They once wanted to drop mine after giving me a refund of accumulated payments, but after I pointed out that they had refunded the 'cushion', so a lower payment over winter would mean arrears, they agreed to leave the payment be.
  • Scottish Power allow me to change my DD amount. I have to do a meter reading (do them monthly anyway) & it will automatically produce a bill & a knew DD amount, then asks if I want to keep my old DD or set it myself. Very flexible.

I use EDF online account management and they allow you to change the DD amount, but it is reviewed. I usually have to keep putting it back up as they seem to want to reduce it in the summer. I've been with them 5 years and our annual consumption is pretty steady so I know what I need to pay, and we usually end up spot on by the annual review date.
  • Really! Scottish power have allowed me to do this for eons

You can set the Scottish Power DD amount yourself, but there are limits. Based on this month's readings they wanted to increase my DD by about £32, I was allowed to change that but only down to an increase of around £16 per month.
  • Ovo let you adjust your direct debits once with them for 3 months they also suggest a figure from your usage.
